Discovery of Learning
TK-8th Enrichment Program

Discovery of Learning’s TK-8th Enrichment Programs are inspired by the educational philosophies of Bev Bos, Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia. We believe in an eclectic approach to enriching our classrooms and activities as our teachers handcraft your child’s experience. We offer two types of Enrichment classes for families to choose from. Our Core Subject Enrichment Classes, offered 1-3 days per week (varies by campus) include Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies plus rotating elective topics. Our Inspired Learning Day Enrichment Day, offered one specific day per week (varies by campus) includes a multi-curricular approach to passion-driven learning and also includes PE class. Primary Program

Our primary program offers a multi-age classroom setting (children are typically grouped within a 3 to 4-year range) with a child-centered, developmental, project-based, hands-on approach. Learning takes place at a child’s own pace, giving students opportunities to make choices about how to approach a subject.

At Discovery of Learning, our Primary Program Classes:

  • Address the whole child and adapt to multiple learning styles, as well as giving emotional health the same importance as academics.
  • Children learn valuable problem-solving and critical thinking skills when teachers and/or parents support the social and emotional development of each child.
  • Students are able to move around the room, interact with each other on the floor, and make decisions together.
  • Classes are not divided according to child age or grade level, but grouped together in grade ranges, giving children an opportunity to learn and work to the best of their ability.
  • Curriculum, covering the four core subject areas of Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science, is hand-crafted.
  • Children learn through a variety of activities that are teacher-guided, child-led, project-based, involve cooperative games, incorporate arts and music, and use a variety of enriching materials.
  • Teachers provide the children with immediate feedback, working collaboratively to make changes to their work and learn from it.
  • Lunch and outdoor exploration time are considered an extension of the learning environment and are crucial to the child’s social, physical, and intellectual development.

Primary Program Subjects

In this unique setting, our teachers work collaboratively with students to provide guidance and individualized instruction in Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. This can be done with work already begun and brought from home, or our teacher will create individual curriculum
for each child based on their abilities at that time in Language Arts and Math. Our teachers work as a team to develop Science units that are engaging and hands-on with the guidance of multiple science curriculums and taking a trip through the states or countries, with the guidance of multiple history curriculums to learn about the geography, historical events, important residents and other interesting facts about each state in the US or country. These classes also use the arts to bring learning to life on a daily basis. Teachers additionally engage the children in on-going interest led projects. The multi-aged classroom provides children the opportunity to be leaders, learn from others, and collaborate with peers.

Electives: Students are introduced to 1-3 elective subjects per week, depending on the number of days they attend campus. Each Elective course runs for 8 weeks, allowing children to explore the subject with more depth. Subjects are then rotated in 8 week sessions. These classes can be taken as part of our full day program or enrolled in as an Electives only option, view Elective topics here.

Discovery of Learning’s Inspired Learning Day (Days vary by Campus)

Inspired Learning Day is offered 1 Day from 9:00 am – 2:30 pm and is dedicated to encouraging all children to explore their interests & passions through self-directed and collaborative, multi-curricular passion projects fostered and supported by DOL teachers. This day also includes a PE class which allows children to build camaraderie, friendship and collaboration skills as they work together to play group sports and other fun, group based physical activities.

Our teachers will facilitate and mentor the children as they dive into individual or group passion-driven learning, taking pride in and ownership of their education. Being able to express the desire to learn about a specific topic or develop an idea and transform it into a whole project is our vision. Our program focuses on the idea that each child can learn, they just all learn differently. At Discovery of Learning, the teachers work alongside your child, giving each child tools based on their needs to learn to problem-solve, learn to communicate effectively and use those tools in everyday life.

A few of our Self-Directed Day goals are to help your child:

  • Build confidence, independence, motivation to develop different skills for lifelong learning
  • Identify their interests and passions through careful observation of the teacher and tracking the children’s ideas
  • Deepen their understanding and knowledge of chosen subjects and learn how to cross apply skills to multiple subjects
  • Take on leadership of projects that are based on their own ideas, work collaboratively with peers and teachers to bring their plans to life.
  • Build stronger communication skills as they work with others with different ability levels, communication styles and personalities, as well as speaking in front of a group of peers
