Discovery of Learning
High School Hybrid Program
Our High School program is designed to support teens in their educational journey and assist them in setting goals for the future. We partner with homeschooling families to provide a flexible path and individualized program that best fits the needs of the high schooler all while exploring different career, trade school, or college path. Discovery of Learning supports each high schooler’s learning style and special interests. They can choose up to 4 days of learning (3 Core Enrichment Days and/or 1 Inspired Learning Day).
Core Enrichment Program
Teens will work with guidance from their family and mentor teacher to set core curriculum goals. On campus, they work toward goal completion in a variety of ways, such as working independently, with a group of peers, alongside our teachers, by participating in a teacher-led workshop or gaining knowledge from a guest speaker. Completed work will be utilized as work samples for students enrolled with a charter. High schoolers are expected to work independently, or with the support of their parent(s).
Mentor Meetings
Students build a trusted relationship with their Mentor Teacher to help them explore their strengths, passions, life goals, and desires. The Mentor teacher meets with each student regularly to set goals in their individualized Core Program and Interest Led Learning Projects. Through these meetings, the teacher offers guidance, support, feedback, and most importantly a safe place to learn and make mistakes.
In addition to the scheduled meetings, students are encouraged to reach out to their Mentor Teacher for support and guidance as needed.
These Mentor Meetings are crucial in helping students stay on track with their goals, reflect on their progress, and make adjustments as needed. The mentor relationship provides a sense of accountability and support that can help students navigate the challenges and uncertainties of their academic journey.
Overall, Mentor Meetings play a key role in the personalized learning experience at our school, fostering a strong connection between students and teachers and empowering them to take ownership of their education and future goals.
College and Career Goals
Discovery of Learning prides itself on meeting the needs of the individual teen throughout their homeschool and educational journey. Your teens mentor teacher will hold a meeting monthly to assess, discuss, review and revise their career goals. We use a goal sheet process to help each teen track their progress and reach their desired goals. Setting long-term goals can be daunting to a young teen. The mentor teacher can help and coordinate opportunities for the learner to participate in community service, internships and dual enrollment at the local community college. This will help each individual teen form their long-term goal and explore career options.
Inspired Learning Day
Inspired Learning offers high school students the freedom to pursue their passions and interests without constraints. This self-directed approach encourages teens to take ownership of their education, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. By pursuing projects and activities they are genuinely interested in, students develop a deeper understanding of subjects, increased motivation, and a strong sense of responsibility. This method prepares them for real-world challenges, promotes lifelong learning, and cultivates the independence and adaptability essential for success in college, careers, and beyond.
Students will be encouraged to socialize and build deeper bonds with peers, while they are also be provided with space and time to work independently on their educational goals.
Guest speakers come and give career inspiration to our students that help foster ideas in our teens of the possibilities of opportunity they can choose to pursue in adulthood.
Inspired Learning Day also includes a weekly Life Skills Elective class. This class topic will rotate every 8 weeks and will provide them the opportunity to learn and practice the skills they will use in life or in a career setting.
